Creative writing is where it all started for me. Before I became an editor, my passion was in writing stories and expressing myself through words. Now I specialise in helping creative writers improve their manuscripts.
Allowing an editor to see your work in progress (WIP) or a draft can be so daunting. I think that is especially true for creative writers. We share so much of ourselves in our writing that it can be hard to ask somebody to look at it with a critical eye. My goal whenever I work with a creative writer is to make the editing process more approachable and provide a positive experience.
Every story is unique, and I believe in making every editing experience unique too.
Fiction Editing
Have you written a novel, novella, or short story? You may have revised your manuscript already, but if you intend to publish your work of fiction through a traditional publisher or by self-publishing, then it’s time to find an editor.
I take a collaborative approach to structural or content editing and will work with you to assess the manuscript. Some authors have specific concerns about their writing, which I will take into consideration as I provide constructive feedback. There are many writing elements I can help you improve, including but not limited to narrative structure, characterisation, dialogue, and voice.
In addition to editing the content, I will work with you to prepare your story for the outcome you desire. Whether you wish to self-publish, find a traditional publisher, or submit to a literary journal, I can help you navigate the submission process, ensure your fiction writing adheres to their guidelines, and make sure your manuscript is well-crafted and error-free.
Nonfiction Editing
Nonfiction can come in different forms, such as creative nonfiction, memoir, and personal essay. These stories often centre around personal experiences that have had a significant impact on the author’s life or identity, and sometimes include elements of research on intersecting topics. I approach personal nonfiction works with nuanced sensitivity and respect throughout the editing process. Allow me to help you bring your creative nonfiction, personal essay, or memoir to the next level.
Nonfiction writing can also encompass special interest books, which may have more informative or journalistic content. I have worked on special interest books about fashion, travel and lifestyle, cooking, and climate change to name a few. If you have a book about a special interest, I can provide editing feedback on everything from content to layout so that you can confidently share your passion with others.
Poetry Editing
Poetry is such an expressive and personal form of writing. My editing approach focuses on interrogating meaning and expressing intention in the way the poet desires, without altering the poet’s voice or meaning. Depending on the writer’s aim, I can provide feedback on rhythm, pacing, and word choices, though sometimes a hands-off approach is best for this writing form.
