An editor can help improve your writing in many ways. The editing process generally consists of three levels, each with a different overarching focus. To ensure you always receive the services you need, please refer to these definitions when requesting a quote. Click the hyperlinked headings for more detail!
Content Editing
This is also referred to as structural editing. In this stage of editing, I’ll work closely with you to improve structure, flow, and style. I will also address potential ethical or legal issues. The aims is to strengthen the overall content. This could include adding, removing, rewriting and rearranging parts of the text, among other major changes.
Copy Editing
This level of editing focuses on sentence-level details to eradicate errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar and usage. I also use this stage of editing to correct consistency issues, such as tense and spelling conventions. Resources like a house style guide or project spelling sheet might be created to achieve this, or I can refer to and build on these documents if they have been supplied.
Proofreading
This is the stage of editing that occurs once the writing has been placed in a design file or is otherwise formatted for publication. It involves evaluating the text’s readability on the page, addressing design and layout issues, and cross-checking the copy edited version to ensure no formatting or sections of text are missing. This is the final stage of editing before the text is published or printed.
